We have previously chronicled some shocking statistics regarding overweight Americans, but the bad news just keeps on coming. Apparently fat cells are robbing the cradle, not even waiting until our children are of a decent age. I speak as if it is not our fault, although of course it is… regardless, this article in the Wall Street Journal Blog points out that being overweight is starting to become a problem at a very early age, as young as two years old. More than one out of every ten babies is considered fat nowadays, compared to less than half that amount two decades ago.
These figures are astounding; it makes one wonder what kind of diets these parents have these children on so that they are gaining this sort of weight during one of the most active times in their life. Of course, it is probably the result of eating the same foods that the parents themselves are eating. Sure, it’s easier to give your child an Egg McMuffin from McDonald’s than it is to cook a healthy meal at home, but is the convenience worth hampering your child with a weight problem for the rest of his or her life?
The simple fact is that overweight children are far more likely to contract early onset diabetes, asthma and other breathing problems, sleep disorders and psychological ailments. Being larger also places more strain on the heart.
There simple is no excuse for this. We at YoNaturals are appalled, but can do nothing more than we are already attempting to do: provide healthier alternative for children in schools and other public places. But the cause of these problems is in the home, and parents simply must educate themselves and take a more proactive role in shaping the eating habits of their children. Their lives hang in the balance.
